The big trade Print E-mail

The Vikings went out there and made a huge deal. It was not a deal I was expecting them to try and pull of. It seems a little out of character for the VIkes to mortgage so many draft picks for just one player.

In this instance I am glad they did. The last time the Vikes gave up so many picks was probably the ill-fated Herschel Walker trade of the early 90's/ Now that obviously allowed the Cowboys to catapult themselves back to Super Bowl greatness.

Trading for Jared Allen I think is really going to jump start this Vikings. We gave up three high draft picks and a boat load of guaranteed money. However, the picks are never guaranteed to pan out. We have a proven NFL commodity in Allen. He had over 40 sacks in his four year career. Our biggest need going into the draft was defensive end. It always seems to be. With Erasums James seemingly a bust with knee problems Kenechi sidelined with leukemia it was a sport we had to address. Moving Ray Edwards to the left will be great.

With this trade I think(barring major injuries) believe the VIkings are now at least a wild card contender and probably more of a division winner threat. I am not going to mention Super Bowl just yet. With T-Jack still under center I am still a little leery. If the passsing game improves we are set.

Now having filled our biggest need where do the Vikings turn. Most likely with their second round pick they go offensive line. I don't see any way around it. This isn't a great class for receivers or the secondary. Plus with McKinnie possibly being traded our seeming disinterest in resiging Matt Birk our OL depth will go down quickly. There are few good second round level talents this year.
