The Beijing Olympics start in a few months. These Olympics have been the most contentious since probably the 1980 version in Moscow when the U.S. boycotted because of the Soviet Union's invasion of Afghanistan. This time it isn't just the U.S. who are considering some action on this.
China's recent crackdown on dissidents in TIbet is troubling at best. At worst it is a complete destruction of a people. Ever since China invaded Tibet in the 1950's, this area has been a hotbed of political upheaval and violence. China believes Tibet belongs while the people believe they deserve self-determination. This has all come back into play with the Olympics in Beijing in a few months.
Countries around the world are protesting the Chinese action in Tibet. The United States, Great Britain, France. and Australia are just a few of the protesting countries. On Sunday while the Olympic torch was being carried through Paris, several protesters lunged at the torch and tried to put it out. There were demonstrations all along the way. It was nice to see the French protest something other than George W.Bush. All jokes aside, this is a very real situation that has difficult solutions.
I don't want to legitimize China. They are a corrupt, decadent, and autocratic country that deserves none of our money, respect, and recognition. However, the political reality of that is staggering. We can't pull out of the Chinese economy. We can pull out of their Olympic Games though. I think this is one place where we really need to make a stand. If we are so preventing human rights abuses, this is a must. Hosting the Olympic Games is the first step in many countries' step toward legitimacy in the world. The IOC did the world a disservice in 2001 by giving China the Games. The rest of the world needs to stand up to tyranny and oppression. Our country needs to boycott these Games.
(Just and added two cents to JAWA's post- Here is a story on ESPN about protest in San Fransico .)
