Final Four Thoughts Print E-mail
Written by Drakesax
This year is the first time that all four number one seeds made it to the Final Four and for all intensive purposes the Final Four was still extremely boring.  Leading up to the game I was extremely excited: I had picked up all the appropriate food stuff, had made the requisite beer run, had the big t.v. in play, had consumed an appropriate amount of coffee, all of the pre-requisite items I could think of.  Then  the tip occurred and all of my best laid plans were completely and totally destroyed...

The UCLA v. Memphis game totally blew my mind.  Memphis only has one loss on the season, but UCLA has been playing some serious competition all year long.  I mean come on the PAC-10 is filled with athletes.  Conference USA is straight awful.  Rice is a complete and total joke and even though they didn't win in conference they might not have been the weakest team in the C-USA.  Outside of Memphis no one in C-USA deserved much of anything.  UAB didn't even finish the season ranked.  The number two team in the conference wasn't ranked.  Maybe I missed something but Memphis makes the tourney and no one else from C-USA made it in.  The PAC-10 had six teams in the tourney.  Ten minutes into the UCLA/Memphis game it was over.  Memphis was obviously the better team.  UCLA and all of their "amazing" guard depth had no answer for Derrick Rose.  Thankfully Kevin Love didn't show much.  My great fear had been that Love just crushed and played himself into the top five maybe even top three.  At that point in time the Wolves would totally draft him and that would be diseased, completely and totally diseased.  It was such a boring basketball game though.  Chris Douglas Roberts could do anything he wanted too, Derrick Rose was unstoppable and Joey Dorsey just crushed Kevin Love down-low.  Isn't Memphis supposed to suck at free-throws too?  They were lights out from the line.  Overall it was a lame game.  Derrick Rose might just have played himself into the number one pick, more on that later in the piece.

Kansas/North Carolina was then set to redeem the night.  Instead this game was even more lame.  How could a game be more lame then UCLA/Memphis?  Kansas was just all over that ass.  NC came out a little bit at the end of the first into the beginning of the second.  It was just so weak.  NC was the overall number one seed and they were down 28, 28 people.   Kansas looked deadly.  This was supposed to be the first year in about ten years that didn't suck and instead it was probably the worst final four I've ever watched.  Tyler Hansborough sucks so bad its not even funny.  If that guy comes out this year he's top twenty at best, but probably twenty-five to thirty.  How can a team by as good as NC is without having a top ten pick on its roster?  Kansas crushed NC, but do they have a top ten either?  Kansas is wicked deep, wicked.

Thinking about draft implications from these games here are a few of my off the top of my head thoughts.  Derrick Rose just showed he is number one overall pick potential but more then anything else he shows that there are two excellent picks in this draft.  With as good as Rose looked I think people might forget about Michael Beasley a little bit and I think they'll probably question  Beasley's position in the pros.  A think a combination of Rose crushing big right now and Beasley being a bit of a tweener at power-forward/small-forward.  Love should stay in school and so should the entire UCLA roster.  While I'm telling people to finish off their degrees let's hope that all of the Tar-Heels decide to stay at school.  Memphis might be really good right now but its over after tonights final.  CDR, Rose, Dorsey and Dozier are probably all gone.  Then the rumors will start coming out that Calipari broke some rules again.  I'm hoping the whispers out there aren't true but its happened in the past to coach and it might happen again.  Kansas has a few interesting pro-prospects.  I'd like to see some of these Kansas guys as late round picks or early seconds.  Guys like Brandon Rush could be great "glue" guys in NBA teams.  Mario Chalmers seems to be a smart guard that a team lacking thereof, say the Wolves, wouldn't be hurt to pick-up.  I'm just not sure where these guy will or should go in the draft.  I don't see any of these guys as top five or really in the top ten.  Mario Chalmers might be a top ten to top fifteen pick.  I'm not all over Sasha Kaun but he would be better depth then what the Wolves currently have.  I haven't broken down all the bigs that would be falling to the Wolves in the early second but I'd imagine Kaun would be there and might even be around as an undrafted free agent.  As an undrafted free agent a guy like Kaun has to be worth a flier, he's bigger then Richards already.  Kansas is sneaky and deep.  I'd like some of their guys to add depth to my team, the Wolves.

I'm really hoping that the final is better then the final four.  I'm not holding my breath and I'm not getting excited.  I am hoping Rose crushes because I still think Beasley is a solid player and I don't think the Wolves could ever be lucky enough to snag the first pick in the draft, but maybe two can fall too us?
