A New Foray for Sports Shot Print E-mail

While here at MN Sports Shot we are mostly concerned with Minnesota sports and all of its glory, I have decided to take a break from that and comment on our current political climate. The 7 years or so that Bush has ruled(yes I said ruled) have turned out to be dark times. Our standing in the world has never been lower. We are a mess. Change needed? You betcha.

The countdown to Bush's leaving office began for many in late January of 2001. They really kicked into gear after the election of 2004. Then after the 2006 election they went to warp speed. Suddenly it wasn't much of a joke anymore. People really wanted him to go. The days of gung-ho foreign policy needed to end. Our economy has been on a steady decline for several years. I hesitate to use the word recession just yet. Our unemployment and inflation rate remain too low to go that far. Also, we have not had any true negative growth in our GDP. That is a major indicator of a recession.

HOWEVER, our economy is slowing. Our national debt is at a record high and our deficits keep adding to it. The irresponsible tax cuts passed under Bush have not helped. The other main cause? Well, of course our little military incursion into Iraq. Billions upon billions have been spent in a war that has done nothing to fight the "war on terrorism." I won't even get into the war on a noun. A few days in Iraq could pay for years of the SCHIP program which would have give millions of more children health care. But thank God we are protecting those oil fields so that our prices will stay low....uh oh!

We are down to three candidates for President- Senators McCain, Clinton, and Obama. Personally I have trhown my support behind Senator Obama. Am I right? I am not sure. I know that he is different and is saying all the things I like to hear. However, many politicians have come and gone with promises for change. I want this one to deliver. This time I am truly going to hold whomever wins accountable. Where this country goes in the next decade or so will determine the world's fate. We still are the coutnry held up to the highest standard. We are still the light of the world. People take death defying journeys to live here. America must return to be that light. What we need is not be the police of the world, but the hope of the world. I think Obama can be that hope.
