On one of my last posts I went really in depth about who I consider my top five Minnesota professional athletes. I won't go into detail as much as I did last time. The new list is just Minnesota born sports figures. It is quite unbelievable who has come out of Minnesota. There are dozens and dozens I could choose but here are my top five.
1.Herb Brooks-quite simply he was responsible for the greatest moment in United States sports history. Trained and coached the '80 Olympic team to the upset of the Soviet Union and then beat Finland for the Gold. Coached Minnesota Gophers to 3 national titles. A true legend.
2.Bronko Nagursi-one of the pioneers of the NFL. Led the Chicago bears to three titiles. Star studded career at the University of Minnesota.
3.Dave Winfield-the greatest straight up athlete to ever come out of Minnesota. A member of the Baseball Hall of Fame.Only person to be drafted in three different sports-basketball, baseball, and football(never played a down of college football).
4.Bruce Smith-led the GOphers to two straight national titles in football in 1941-42. Only Minnesota player to win Heisman Trophy. Best player in Gopher history.
5.Neal Broten-one of the best U.S. born players ever. First American born player to reach 100 points in a season. A member of the 1980 Olympic winning time. Won the trifecta-college national title, Olympic Gold, and the Stanley Cup.
There's my list. I am sure my colleagues will add their two cents.
