What a time to be a Minnesota sports fan. Well, at least a Minnesota hockey fan. Well after tonight’s Gopher loss to Michigan Tech, it’s a good time to be a Minnesota Wild fan. The wild are still clinging to the top spot in the NHL after playing with nearly 10 rookies and having a regular rotation into the training room. Latendresse and Zidlicky have been out a majority of the season with Clutterbuck and Setoguchi missing recent games. Perhaps the most noteworthy injury is Josh Harding’s “upper body” issue resulting from an errant elbow from a fellow Wild member. This has been noteworthy because, with Backstrom already sidelined, the Wild called up Matt Hacket from the Houston Aeros of the AHL. He made his NHL debut after Harding went down in the first minute of the game on December 6th. His first start came the next game on December 8th. He’s handled himself surprisingly well in his first two appearances notching a win in both games. It seems like finally one Minnesota team has things going right for them (knock on wood). Hopefully the Gophs can come back tomorrow night to split the series with Tech. It’s also worth [...]

Its pretty simple to me if an overtime game is worth 3 points then all games should be worth 3 points. The NHL has a great product to offer the sporting public. They just keep getting in their own way. Darren Haynes tweeted this image earlier in the day and I can’t help but like it. (image below). I’m a Minnesota fan and even with the 3 point system the Wild wouldn’t be in the playoffs today. They would have a games in hand on teams ahead of them and would be in a much better position to catch one of the final spots in the playoffs. Until the NHL decides it’s time to give up the 3 point overtime ruse the regular season will continue to be a bit of a cluster. Currently there is no reason to win in the final 5-10 minutes of the 3rd period. There is more incentive not to break a tie so that you make sure you get at least 1 point. If the winner got three points from a regulation victory there would be more incentive to play in those final 5-10 minutes because 3 points add up a lot quicker then [...]

The Twins are taking on the Yankees again, and losing the first game of the ALDS at home. What’s new there? Jesse Crain hanging a slider and Mark Teixeira depositing it just inside the right foul pole for a 6-4 lead that the Yankees bullpen made hold-up. Outside of the fact it took for freaking ever it was a pretty good game and I was really happy with the Twins defense. The Wild are taking on the Canes in Finland. They jumped on them early, however its been all Canes so far into the 2nd period. Its been sloppy on both sides. The Canes have let the Wild own the crease on both ends of the ice. The Wild don’t look a lot faster then they did last year, which I contend was our biggest weakness. Backs looks better then he did last year early but he’s still not the steel curtain he was a few years ago. Madden and Cullen don’t lose face-offs and that’s nice, but they do seem to have cement skates. Can’t say I’ve heard Hav’ name called much today until he missed on that great 1-1 against Cam Ward but thankfully Cullen was there to [...]

Just in case you didn’t believe me. That scruff is fierce. Digg this! Share this on Facebook Post this to MySpace Tweet This! Email this to a friend? Get Shareaholic

Just played with this new ESPN toy for a few minutes and I had to share it. Try it out here. The first round of the NBA playoffs are really all that’s going to matter to me this season. The west is stacked but by the time they get to the finals they should have beaten the snot out of each other enough to give the east a prayer. My favorite part about this toy is that you can put any team in your want. I played with all the crappy teams a few times and I even got to see the Wolves win a championship. Isn’t make-believe great!
IPODs rock, just to get that out of the way. Along those lines the Twins defense is going to be pretty aight this season. Punto on third taint horrible as long as he hits above the Mendoza line. Harby at short has promise. The O-Dogg at second looks tight. Span in center makes us wicked phatty in the outfield. Cuddy does what he can and he limits other team’s running games with his cannon for an arm. Delmon is an adventure in left but he seems to be trending up. The M & M Boys are about as good as they get. Could this team limit it to under 20 errors for the season? I’m excited to watch out defense especially with the pressure our offense can put on other team’s. Digg this! Share this on Facebook Post this to MySpace Tweet This!
The Wolves are looking at having 3 picks in the 1st round of the NBA draft. Here’s what I think we should do.Based on current records the Wolves top pick can be no worse than 3rd. So we are guaranteed to get one of the big 3 of this draft: John Wall, Evan Turner or DeMarcus Cousins. We will also have a pick somewhere between 15-17 depending on how records breakdown which will come from the Nuggets(originally the Bobcats) in exchange for Ty Lawson. Next we get Utah’s pick that will be around 25 that we got in a trade last year. So that’s quite a few picks to work with. Here’s what I think. Assuming we get the first pick, it has to be Wall even though we have a glut of PGs right now. All of the guys are trade worthy. Wall just has too much potential to pass up. If we get the second pick it’s Turner all the way. Here is my dream scenario: We get the second pick. Draft Turner straight up. No trades. He will translate so well to the NBA game as a PG. He is long and tall something you can’t teach. [...]

Watching Day 2 of the Olympics. Apolo Ohno just blew away the field…its crazy how physics doesn’t even seem to effect him. Short track speed skating is such a great bang-bang sport its fun to watch. 13.5 laps is the game tonight. One lap takes like less then 15 seconds. Ohno didn’t even make a move until roughly two laps where remaining and then when he made his move effortlessly around the four skaters in front of on the outside. Think about it he went outside, where he had a greater distance to cover, and easily over-took his competitors. Now, onto women’s moguls. This is nuts too. The Olympics are insane. These women are flying down this mogul course. I know its just the semi-finals, but its crazy how fast all of these sports go. The moguls are supposed to be where Canada wins its first gold medal. Pretty sweet. They do insane acrobatics then they ski a mogul course, nuts. The balance that these athletes have is bananas. Sometimes I almost fall down just getting out of bed but shoot these people do insane stuff. When Kearney hit that second auto-boof man she really exploded off that kicker, totally stayed out [...]

The Wolves have no chance of making the playoffs. Everyone calm down. Here is who I think the Wolves should target in Free Agency. To start I am not going to bother talking about Chris Bosh, Dwyane Wade or Lebron James. It ain’t gonna happen. We would have to give them ownership of the team and even then it’s iffy. Here are my top 5: 1. Rudy Gay SF, Memphis-He is my number 1 target. He will also be tough to get now because Memphis is playing well and perhaps on the verge of a playoff berth. Also, he is a restricted free agent so Memphis can match whatever we would offer. If he really doesn’t want to play there, then a sign and trade is the most likely option. All that being said this is why I want him. Great athlete, good instincts and a decent shooter. He can be the scorer on the wing we really need. He can stretch the floor with his decent 3 point shot and ability to drive to the basket or pull for the short jumper. Also, only 23 years old and about to go into the prime of his career. I think [...]
