I’ve been looking over the Bison’s roster and box scores from this season. From the paper alone its not looking good for the Bison. Unless the Bison’s website isn’t accurate they max out at 6′-9″ 250lbs and they start a 6′-8″ 230lbs freshmen at center. The Gopher’s are going to be starting a front line that boasts 6′-8″ 240lbs Trevor Mbakwe and 6′-11″ 241lbs Ralph Sampson III. That’s just two of the Gopher’s six “big men”. At the same time the Bison did take the Oregon Ducks to overtime in their official season opener. If the Bison are on their toes and the Gopher’s suffer either a post Puerto Rico let-down or a pre-Big Ten v ACC trap game this could be interesting. Otherwise, I’ll be more interested in seeing the Gopher’s 2nd and 3rd teams and any exotic offensive/defensive sets that Tubby decides to trot out. For the Bison look-out for senior Michael Tveidt this season he is averaging 16.5 points per game and he’ll probably be matched up with Rodney Williams. Either way it’ll be interesting to see if Williams can stick with his man defensively or purely tire him out on the offensive side of the ball.
It’s been a while since I’ve posted about my boys. Here is a quick rundown from what I saw last night. 1. The Gophers have had trouble scoring goals all year. However, they are finding the back of the net more and more. 2. After a poor start, they are still in the hunt for home ice in the WCHA Final Five. 3. Despite his size Jake Cepis was the best player last night. He makes up for his lack of size with speed and determination. I don’t think he’s NHL material but he sure is a spark plug. 4. Jordan Schroeder is a ridiculous player. And by ridiculous player I mean please don’t ever graduate because you’re awesome and play with the Gophers forever. 5. Alex Kangas despite letting 4 goals by looked sharp. 2 of the goals weren’t really his fault.Bad clear outs and missed assignments caused huge space near the crease for those 2 goals. 6. Nick Leddy looked good. After having a jaw injury he has come back strong. The Wild traded him to the Blackhawks. I hope they didn’t make a mistake. Leddy has a wicked shot. 7. Lucia needs to recruit goal scorers. We are [...]

Can the Gophers take care of business at home against the Wolverines tonight? Ralph Sampson III is going to have play well for the home team to win. Let’s hope the Gophers don’t try to make this a three point contest because Michigan is deceptively good from outside. Let’s give’em the full-court press and outwork the Wolerines for the entire length of the court. Live Blogging Bob Knight calling the game on ESPN HD tonight. Sweet! Gophers are looking to use their height inside but they aren’t finding much inside to start the game. Let’s hope they stick with this though Michigan is hitting from outside early with two quick 3′s Gophers are cold Not playing tough inside yet Sampson is playing weak inside Paul Carter comes in for Damien Johnson The Gophers first basket via a sweet inside play from Hoffarber Sampson got to the line and only hit one of two Second unit is in now Iverson is playing tough inside but not consistent The Gophers are going inside but they aren’t getting points 16-10 Michigan and the Gophers are already giving up the inside game and are looking more perimeter pick & pop Westbrook isn’t playing that great Carter/Johnson/Sampson/Hoffarber/Joseph [...]

Of course we want to believe that the Gophers should have destroyed the Nittany Lions but it was a close game. Here are a few of my thoughts from yesterday’s game. 1.Ralph Sampson looked great. He was playing superb defense throughout the game. However, it was his offense that look especially good. Some pretty decent post moves. But the most important thing: he was aggressive. He needs to own the paint. 2. Blake Hoffarber has my permission to shoot at anytime from three point land. Seriously, put it up buddy. 3. Lawrence Westbrook is a streaky player, everyone sees that. However, in trying to get on of his streaks he really puts up some dumb shots. One of his shots missed everything except the right side of the backboard. Yuck. That said, what an amazing shot to win the game. That should be a top ten play this week. 4. Talor Battle is a good player. I am not sure if he is a sure fire NBA prospect. I don’t think he has the size but I could see him being a very good overseas player. 5. Penn State has some decent 3 point shooters. They were definitely getting some [...]

First off the live blog was a lot of fun. We’ll try to do this as often as we can for MN related sporting events. Who knows maybe we’ll be able to do the Super Bowl next week. I can’t say this enough the Gopher’s are not playing a physical game. They need to play tough. There isn’t a killer mentaliy on this Gopher’s team. Tubby has a tenacious spirit and loves defense. The Gophers for the most part play solid defense, but their bigs don’t play big. When the game is over the Gophers took themselves out of this game by not playing tough. Evan Turner is a beast. All of the rust is gone and now he’s working to solidify his standing as a potential number one pick in this coming years NBA Draft. From just watching OSU closely twice this year, being the two Gopher games, I’d say they’ve got other legit NBA talents on this team. William Bufford & David Lighty are both solid players and I for one would take either of them to start for the Gophers right now. Unless those two guys really come on strong in the second half of this season [...]

I am going to live blog the Gophers vs. Buckeyes game. I will share some of my thoughts and insights. 1.Damian Johnson is so damn athletic. He can really create some opportunities for himself and others. 2.Devoe Joseph is going to have his hands full with Evan Turner because of Turner’s size and quick first step. 3. Despite John Wall’s play, I think Evan Turner so far is my Player of the Year. 4. Tubby’s bench has to be one of the deepest in the country. He can play 10 deep. I doubt many other coaches can say that. 5. Every time I watch a Gopher game, they can’t shoot free throws effectively. Is it me who is cursing them or do they always do that? 6. I really like Ohio’s ability to double team and recover. 7. Jesus Christ, Turner is straight destroying us. We need Ron Artest to guard that guy. 8. Even with the Buckeyes run, we are hanging in there. I think we need to get more looks for our shooters, specifically Hoffarber. 9. I am going to call this game a must-win(all games are must wins, I know that) but this one is huge. We [...]

First off I watched this entire game, while riding my bike and by the end the excitement of the game and the two hours of riding got a little sweat on my notes. I’m a gamer and I can still make them out. My first impressions of both teams where that the Gophers have way more talent and are much more athletic. Northwestern seems to have better basketball sense/savvy. At times I wonder what Tubby is doing presently in games some of his substitutions seem to be counter productive and I’m not always sure I understand the offense he has the team running. Now that I’ve let the game sink in for almost an entire day I realize that right now in the present isn’t as important for this team and this program as the future. I’ve got a few thoughts that I’ll add to the end of this on the program in general but here is my take on last nights game. Northwestern starting off the night taking a lot of outside shots and a lot of threes. The first third of the game they were hitting. The second third of the game they went cold. The final third [...]

The Gopher’s need to turn things around to save this season. What will be their key to do just that? Or maybe more accurately who will be their savior? Team defense isn’t the Gophers problem. It wasn’t their problem last year either. Defense is assuredly our strong-point. In only two of our seven current losses we have given up 70 or more points. With the loss of Al Nolen our perimiter defense is bound to slip and so are our steals. Devoe Joseph and Justin Cobbs are presumably going to pick up Nolen’s minutes. While both players together average 1.2 steals per game to Nolen’s team high 2.4 per game they both play above average team defense and I’m sure just due to more minutes their combined steal number are bound to go up. Plus Cobbs is a freshmen, just feeling his way through his first season with the Gophers and I think that this is one of the better scenarios that could happen to improve his game. What the Gophers haven’t seemed to be able to figure out all season is how to initiate their half-court offense. Nolen has an above average transition game, which suits his defensive tenacity [...]

Settling in around 5 last night I intended to watch a hockey game between the Gophers and the Saint Cloud State Huskies. I got something very different. I have loved Gopher Hockey since I can remember. All the great players came and went through Mariucci Arena are still etched into my brain. The thing I most wanted to see was a national championship which they gave me two of back 02-03. Now I see something very different. Yes we still get amazing hockey players to come to the U of M. That will always be true. They are some seriously skilled players on the Gophers right now: Jordan Schroeder, Nick Leddy, and Zach Budish for example. All are draft picks to the NHL, no doubt. But they don’t seem like a team anymore. It seems to me it is just a collection of talented players playing together. That doesn’t win games let alone national championships. Watching last night was torture. Gophers were down 2-0 after the first. Now some credit has to go to Mike Lee, the Huskies goaltender. He was impressive. But we got our chances and couldn’t put the puck in the net. I was getting so angry [...]
