Timberwolves Draft Update

03/25/2010
By

The Wolves are looking at having 3 picks in the 1st round of the NBA draft. Here’s what I think we should do.Based on current records the Wolves top pick can be no worse than 3rd. So we are guaranteed to get one of the big 3 of this draft: John Wall, Evan Turner or DeMarcus Cousins. We will also have a pick somewhere between 15-17 depending on how records breakdown which will come from the Nuggets(originally the Bobcats)  in exchange for Ty Lawson. Next we get Utah’s pick that will be around 25 that we got in a trade last  year. So that’s quite a few picks to work with.

Here’s what I think. Assuming we get the first pick, it has to be Wall even though we have a glut of PGs right now. All of the guys are trade worthy. Wall just has too much potential to pass up. If we get the second pick it’s Turner all the way. Here is my dream scenario:

We get the second pick.  Draft Turner straight up. No trades. He will translate so well to the NBA game as a PG. He is long and tall something you can’t teach. His first step to the basket is amazing and he is a good ball handler. Like many college players his outside could use work but that will come with NBA training.

Ok here is where I get all dreamy. I want the 3rd pick as well so that we can draft Cousins. Now I know he is pretty similar to Love and Jefferson but I will get to that. Whoever gets the 3rd pick I think will be willing to give it up in exchange for multiple picks and a player. Let’s assume it’s Golden State based on current records. I say we offer our 2 picks and Ramon Sessions for their Number 3. Then we draft Cousins.

Still in fantasy land! Now we have to get rid of one our bigs. Now Kevin Love is younger and seems to have more potential than Big Al. Also, with Al’s recent legal troubles he needs to go. So we propose to trade Big Al to the Pacers for Danny Granger and Jamaal Tinsley(Tinsley makes it work salary wise). I know that’s far fetched but I need to dream.

So here would be my starting 5 for 2010-2011:

PG-Evan Turner

SG-Ryan Gomes

SF-Danny Granger

PF-Kevin Love

C-Darko Milicic

Yes, you read that right I think we need to resign Darko. He still is young. I think he is a legit 10 point 5-6 rebound guy. Granger would be the primary scorer. Love can dominate the boards, chip 15 points or so and is a terrific passer. Gomes is serviceable as a SG for now until we can upgrade through a future draft or through free agency. That being said, we could still make run at a Joe Johnson. Evan Turner can grow into the PG role. Flynn is relegated to the backup. Cousins is the backup to Love and Darko. Honestly, I think that would be a team with potential.

What do you think?
