Of course we want to believe that the Gophers should have destroyed the Nittany Lions but it was a close game. Here are a few of my thoughts from yesterday’s game.
1.Ralph Sampson looked great. He was playing superb defense throughout the game. However, it was his offense that look especially good. Some pretty decent post moves. But the most important thing: he was aggressive. He needs to own the paint.
2. Blake Hoffarber has my permission to shoot at anytime from three point land. Seriously, put it up buddy.
3. Lawrence Westbrook is a streaky player, everyone sees that. However, in trying to get on of his streaks he really puts up some dumb shots. One of his shots missed everything except the right side of the backboard. Yuck. That said, what an amazing shot to win the game. That should be a top ten play this week.
4. Talor Battle is a good player. I am not sure if he is a sure fire NBA prospect. I don’t think he has the size but I could see him being a very good overseas player.
5. Penn State has some decent 3 point shooters. They were definitely getting some open looks. Had they shot just a little better I doubt Minnesota coud have matched them.
6. Devoe Joseph could be a great point guard. However, like Westbrook he chucks up too many bad shots. I want him to be more of a distributor and get Johnson, Sampson, and Hoffarber more open shots.
7. As I have said before, I think we need to see more of that Tubby Smith full court press. It really forces some bad passes and turnovers. And we can really wear down some teams.
8. I would like to see Rodney Williams get some more playing time. He is such an amazing athlete that he could be a potential matchup nightmare for a lot of teams.
9.Colton Iverson doesn’t look like a D1 player right now. He gets manhandled inside by quicker and stronger players. He really needs to add some muscle and get more aggressive.
10. Lastly, this is a win. That’s it. It’s one we are supposed to get so it does little for our NCAA chances. However, a win is still a win. Good game.
